Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa Appoints new Executive Director
Eileen Dooley, Board Chair of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa, today announced the appointment of Betsy Chaly as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective January 25, 2024.
“We are delighted to welcome Betsy to the Elizabeth Fry Ottawa team,” said Ms. Dooley. “She is a skilled and experienced leader with a strong background in marketing and communications and administration, as well as fundraising.”
Betsy is a seasoned executive who brings private and not-for-profit experience to the organization. Most recently, Betsy has worked as the National Director of Marketing and Communications for United Way Centraide Canada. Her previous experience includes senior positions at Indspire, the Canada Media Fund, SOCAN and support to numerous clients as a senior consultant. Betsy has co-led initiatives related to equity, diversity and inclusion and brings a passion and enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
Betsy speaks English, French and Spanish and holds an MBA from the University of New Brunswick. She currently sits as a Board member of several local and national organizations. “The Elizabeth Fry Society is extremely lucky to have Betsy join our strong and passionate management team and staff”, said Ms. Dooley.
“I am excited to serve this important community service organization that provides critical advocacy and support to vulnerable and marginalized women and gender-diverse individuals in the Ottawa region,” said Ms. Chaly. “I look forward to collaborating with the staff team to advance the Elizabeth Fry Ottawa mission.”
Betsy takes over the role from retiring Executive Director, Cathy Robinson, who has served the Society since 2019. “The Board of Directors is immensely grateful for Cathy’s leadership during some very challenging years. She has led the organization with strength, vision and passion, and has built a strong foundation that will serve the organization well.”

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa advocates for and provides practical, effective programs and services to women and gender-diverse individuals who are, or may become criminalized, to reduce harm and to contribute to a healthy community.
